GETTING STARTEDDETERMINE ELIGIBILITYService is not just restricted to military service. Individuals that have paid certain colonial taxes, gave supplies to militia or the Continental Army, served on a jury or Committees of Safety or Correspondence, held State Office(s), etc., will be considered as providing patriotic service. FIND LOCAL CONTACTState Contacts will send your information to the closest SAR Chapter Registrar. COLLECT YOUR DATAMost applicants should be able to document to the 1850 Census. If the remaining lineage has been already proven by a DAR or an SAR applicant, a record copy of her/his application can be ordered online. The DAR and the SAR are separate organizations. The SAR will accept legible DAR record copies approved after 1985 (DAR Member No. 688702 and greater) with DAR Genealogist's checkmarks over relevant data. Any Genealogist's corrections or omissions should be reflected on your SAR application when referencing a record copy. Chapter Registrars will help you fill out the application correctly and help you find acceptable documentation to prove connections between generations in your lineage. FamilySearch.org is a FREE source of information with an online account. ***COLLECT DOCUMENTATION*** - birth, marriage, and death certificates and/or obituaries - incorporate data from those documents into a family tree and/or application. We will need to send your documentation along with the printed and signed application on official SAR watermarked paper. You absolutely need your long form birth certificate, showing that you were born Male, or the application process will not move forward. How To Order Birth Certificates: LA State Registrar & Vital Records - https://ldh.la.gov/page/635 The fastest way to obtain your Louisiana long form birth certificate is to visit your local courthouse Clerk of Court's Office in person with $34 cash in hand. Check link above for requirements and for participating Clerks of Court (as well as the address and the phone number). The courthouse computer system is linked to the Vital Records Central Office in New Orleans, LA. START YOUR APPLICATIONFill out the PDF application - https://www.sar.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/PDF-SAR-Application.pdf Save as an attachment and send to the email address above. Or Fill out your application online. Using your browser of choice, navigate to https://members.sar.org and create an account. Click on "My Applications," then click on "Start a New Application." Choose "Louisiana SAR" under drop-down menu for State, and then choose "Enemund Meullion" under Chapters menu if you are planning on joining the chapter in Alexandria, LA. You will fill out your contact information as well as your lineage.  New Member Regular Application - Age 18 and Older - Above Cost plus $25 for Dr. Enemund Meullion Chapter SAR = $194 ADDITIONAL APPLICATION COSTS$10 for a previously approved and acceptable SAR or DAR Record Copy that can provide lineage and proof of service to Patriot Ancestor may add to the cost if it is not directly purchased by the prospective applicant. The Chapter Registrar should advise said applicant before the purchase is made. The Chapter Registrar may also ask for additional funds (such as the cost to mail applications for signature and to print said applications) to prepare prospective member's application. SUPPLEMENTALSAfter the approval of your original application, you may want to honor other Patriot Ancestors. The application may use approved data from the record copy returned to you in your new member packet. From there, you would document connections between the generations as you did for your original application. In addition to the NSSAR cost above (whether Initial - $100 or Family Plan rate - $40), the LASSAR rate is $7 and the Dr. Enemund Meullion Chapter SAR rate is $5. No additional dues apply for Supplementals. All applications are sent from the local Chapter to State to National, where a NSSAR Genealogist in Louisville, KY, processes the applications. ANNUAL DUESCurrently, total 2024 ANNUAL DUES are $75 (included with application costs for first year):
